Your SEO Starts With Keyword Reseach

Doing keyword research is a very simple process, the basic idea is to create a list of keywords and phrases that you can effectively use to market your website, you want to have phrases that have a reasonably good amount of monthly searches and not too much competition that it is too hard for you to generate traffic with.

There are six steps you need to take to create a solid keyword list:

1.) Do an initial broad keyword search - This is simply researching the main broad keywords in your market, for example, if you are in the golf club market, then the initial search you would conduct is for the keyword "golf club".

2.) The next step is to narrow it down to more specific phrases - You might narrow it down to specific models of golf clubs such as "callaway golf clubs" or you might narrow it down to "golf club reviews" if that's what your website will be based on.

3.) The next step is to narrow it down even further for specific web pages - Let's say you are building a site for golf club reviews, each page you have on the site should be optimized for a specific keyphrase, for example, you could have a page optimized for "golf club equipment reviews" and a page for "miura golf club reviews", this way you are going to be able to generate traffic from a variety of different phrases to the one site.

4.) Now you need to create the list - You should have a list of specific key phrases that you can create webpages and content around, this can be as little as ten phrases or as many as one hundred or whatever amount you can make use of, you want to keep the phrases based around one theme, in other words, don't start including phrases about golf carts on a site for golf clubs.

5.) Next you analyze the competition - You can do this in a number of ways such as searching google for the phrases, checking your competitors back links, looking for adwords ads and so on, you want to have a good idea of what you need to do to rank high for your phrases.

6.) After you have analyzed the competition, keep the winners and discard the rest - Some phrases you had in your list you may find are just too competitive to try to compete for, these should be discarded and you should focus on the ones that you can effectively compete for.

That's basically it, the next step is to build your site and start your marketing plan, you should try to use your key phrases to generate traffic via the search engines and in some cases, with pay-per-click traffic, it's not difficult to do keyword research, just get started and you'll realize how easy it can be.
